The Story故事

Wat Chedi Luang takes its name from the enormous “Great Chedi” at the heart of the temple.

Construction began during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma in the late 14th century and was enlarged by later Lanna rulers until it became one of the most important religious monuments in Chiang Mai.

During the reign of King Tilokaraj, the chedi was further enlarged and established as a major sacred centre of the Lanna capital.

For a period in the 15th century, the Emerald Buddha—today enshrined at Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok—was kept here, reinforcing Wat Chedi Luang’s status as one of the city’s most sacred places.

The upper part of the great chedi later collapsed after a major earthquake in 1545. Its partly ruined form is still visible today and has become one of Chiang Mai’s most recognizable historic silhouettes.

Experience This with AP Thai Studio与 AP Thai Studio 一起感受这里

01

Walk all the way around the great chedi.

Don’t look at it from only one side. The massive square base has niches on all four sides, and parts of the upper terraces are decorated with elephant figures. Walking around the structure gives you a much better sense of its original scale.

02

Look for the elephants.

Along the upper levels of the chedi base are sculpted elephants that appear to support the monument. Some survive more completely than others, so try looking from different sides.

03

Remember that the Emerald Buddha once stood here.

When you face the eastern side of the chedi, imagine the period when the Emerald Buddha was enshrined here. It helps explain why this temple became such an important religious centre in Lanna Chiang Mai.

04

Find the Inthakhin City Pillar shrine.

Wat Chedi Luang is also the present home of Chiang Mai’s Inthakhin city pillar, which was moved here around 1800 during the restoration of the city under King Kawila. The annual Inthakhin ceremony remains an important Chiang Mai tradition.

01

How to Get There如何前往

About a 6-minute walk from AP Thai Studio — approximately 400 metres. Wat Chedi Luang sits very close to Wat Phan Tao, so the two temples are perfect to visit together. We recommend Wat Phan Tao first, then Wat Chedi Luang—the atmosphere changes beautifully from the intimate teak viharn to the massive ancient chedi.
