The Story故事

Wat Phan Tao is one of the Old City temples that we especially recommend because its most remarkable feature is not a grand stone monument, but an extraordinary teak viharn with a royal past.

The wooden hall was originally a Ho Kham, or royal residence, associated with King Mahotaraprathet, the fifth ruler of Chiang Mai.

During the reign of King Inthawichayanon, the seventh ruler of Chiang Mai, the royal hall was dismantled and given to the temple, where its teak structure was reconstructed as the viharn seen today.

This makes it a rare surviving example of a Lanna royal wooden hall adapted for religious use.

Even the temple’s name has more than one story. One explanation connects “Phan Tao” with the many furnaces once used for casting Buddha images in this area—literally “a thousand furnaces.” Another local interpretation links the older pronunciation Pan Tao with the auspicious idea that making merit here could return blessings “a thousandfold.”

“Phan Tao”

Experience This with AP Thai Studio与 AP Thai Studio 一起感受这里

01

Look at the teak viharn itself.

Before going inside, stop and look at the whole building. Unlike the glittering stucco temples you may see elsewhere in Chiang Mai, this hall is constructed almost entirely from dark teak wood. Its proportions and layered roof still preserve the feeling of a traditional Lanna royal hall.

02

Find the peacock above the entrance.

Look up at the wooden gable. One of Wat Phan Tao’s most recognizable details is the beautifully carved peacock motif, an unusual feature that gives the façade its distinctive character.

03

Step inside and look for the old raised pulpit.

Inside the viharn is an antique elevated Dhamma pulpit, more than a century old. It is easy to concentrate only on the Buddha image, so remember to look around the wooden interior as well.

04

Walk behind the wooden hall.

Behind the viharn stands the temple’s main bell-shaped chedi on an octagonal base, surrounded by smaller chedis. This quieter part of the temple has a very different atmosphere from the busy street outside.

01

How to Get There如何前往

About a 5-minute walk from AP Thai Studio — approximately 350 metres. Wat Phan Tao is a little farther than the first few stops in our Explore guide, but still an easy walk through the Old City. Wat Chedi Luang is immediately nearby, so we recommend visiting the two temples together.
