The Story故事
Wat Duang Dee is one of the historic temples inside Chiang Mai’s Old City. Its exact founding date is unknown, but archaeological and inscription evidence shows that the temple was already active by 1496, during the Lanna period. At that time it was known as Wat Ton Mak Nuea.
The temple also appears in Chiang Mai’s political history. Historical chronicles record that in 1761, during a period of political uncertainty, the abbot of Wat Duang Dee was invited to leave the monkhood and take the throne of Chiang Mai.
This unusual episode shows how influential temples and senior monks could be in the civic life of the city.
Today, Wat Duang Dee remains a peaceful local temple, and its present name literally suggests “good fortune,” giving the temple an especially auspicious character for visitors.
旺运寺是清迈古城内历史悠久的寺院之一。虽然确切建寺年代无法确定，但考古资料与佛像基座上的铭文显示，这里至少在1496年就已经存在并持续进行宗教活动，当时曾被称为 Wat Ton Mak Nuea。
这座寺院也曾出现在清迈的政治历史中。史料记载，1761年清迈政局动荡期间，旺运寺住持曾被邀请还俗，并被推举为清迈统治者。
这段少见的历史，也反映出过去寺院与高级僧侣在城市社会中的重要地位。
如今，旺运寺依然是一座安静而有生活气息的本地寺院，而“Duang Dee”这个名字本身也带有好运、吉祥的美好寓意。

Look up at the viharn roof.
The main viharn uses classic Lanna architectural details: layered roofs, carved wood, naga-shaped decorations and mirrored ornament. The gable is especially rich in floral carving.
Find the white Lanna-style chedi.
Behind the viharn is a bell-shaped chedi with layered bases. Small elephant figures appear at the four corners of the lower base, a detail that is easy to miss if you walk by too quickly.
Look for the old scripture library.
The temple’s Ho Trai, or scripture library, was originally built in 1829. Its compact, multi-tiered Lanna form gives it a very different character from the larger viharn nearby.
Step inside and look at the murals.
Inside the viharn are traditional mural themes including heaven and hell and the story of Phra Malai, showing how Buddhist teachings were communicated visually to local communities.
抬头看看佛殿屋顶。
主佛殿保留了典型的兰纳建筑细节，包括层叠屋顶、木雕、那伽装饰与镜面镶饰，尤其是山墙上的植物纹样非常精美。
找一找白色兰纳佛塔。
佛殿后方有一座钟形佛塔，底座层层收分，四角还可以看到小型大象装饰，如果走得太快很容易错过。
留意古老的藏经楼。
寺内的藏经楼最初建于1829年，体量不大，却有非常典型的兰纳多层屋顶形式，与旁边较大的佛殿形成有趣对比。
进入佛殿后看看壁画。
殿内可见“天堂与地狱”以及“帕玛莱”等佛教故事题材，反映过去人们如何通过图像理解佛教教义。

Just a 2-minute walk from AP Thai Studio — about 140 metres. It sits quietly inside the Old City, very close to Three Kings Monument and Wat Inthakhin, so it can easily be included in the same short walking route.
