The Story故事

Wat Inthakhin Sadue Mueang is closely connected to the very beginning of Chiang Mai. The name “Sadue Mueang” means “the navel of the city”, referring to the traditional belief that this area marked the symbolic center of the old city.

Most importantly, this was the original home of Chiang Mai’s Inthakhin city pillar. The pillar represented the stability, protection, and well-being of the city and its people.

Around 1800, during the restoration of Chiang Mai under King Kawila, the Inthakhin pillar was moved from this site to Wat Chedi Luang, where it remains today.

The area also preserves traces of much older religious structures, showing that this part of Chiang Mai held religious importance for centuries.
